Have you ever wanted information about diseases, economics, forest management, grazing, harvesting, insects, reforestation, site preparation, soils, taxes, thinning, tree identification or wildlife management? Maybe you are a woodland owner wanting to improve your ability to manage your woodlot in a more productive manner. Or, maybe you need some publications, a slide set or film for a forestry, wildlife, natural resources or youth meeting. Often knowing where to get the information may be a bigger problem than knowing what you want. For that reason, this guide to information about forest and wildlife management in North Carolina was prepared. For those requiring a more comprehensive regional or national guide, the Conservation Directory is available for purchase from the National Wildlife Federation (address on back).

Requesting Information

When requesting information, be as specific as possible about the subject(s) of interest. For example, a request for facts about “fish” may not produce the “pond management” information you want.

Most of the organizations, agencies, and associations listed in this guide have both free and for sale publications. Likewise, some slide sets and films are loaned free, some rented, and others for sale only. Also, the number of free publications available may be limited. A list of available publications, visual aids, and their cost is usually available upon request.

Local Sources

Many bookstores and libraries have Books in Print published by the E. P. Bowker Company. The subject index volume of Books in Print contains the author(s), title, publisher, publisher’s address, and cost of books currently in print.

The North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service has a toll-free, statewide telephone information service called Extension Teletip. Extension Teletip has over 100 messages on forestry, wildlife, forest products, and a quarterly updated series on timber prices. The Extension Teletip toll-free number is 1-800-662-7301.

The local telephone book will list the local address and telephone number of the Cooperative Extension Service Center (County Agent), Forest Service (County Ranger), Wildlife Resources Commission (County Wildlife Protector), Natural Resources Conservation Service (District Soil Conservationist), and Farm Service Agency.
